For those of you that attended last month’s Ohio CareerConnect meeting, you had the pleasure of witnessing two very different networking techniques. First, Kelley Drumm, Marketing Director of Szarka Financial, was subjected to networking abuse from Larry Rozman, as he demonstrated some very poor networking skills by interrupting her, not listening, and generally talking about himself with little interest in helping her in any way. On top of it, he shook her hand after picking up a BBQ rib, then apologized profusely and personally wiped her hand off!
The second demonstration was much more professional and time efficient as they quickly shared information and discussed potential contacts which may be able to assist them in their job search.
Needless to say, the crowd had some laughs, but the point was made that networking works when it’s a win-win situation – when individuals describe their situation concisely, when they listen to the other individuals, and when they genuinely attempt to find ways to expand each other’s contact list.
We assembled a list of Tips for Networking at an OCC Event (which can be used at other networking events) as well as a list of online References and Links which was distributed at the event.
We hope to see you at our next event on May 28th. Click here for more details.
